Here's how to stop screen recording on a Mac:
Using the Stop Recording Button in the Menu Bar: If you started the recording using the built-in macOS tools (screenshot%20utility), look for a small stop button (a filled-in circle) within a square in the menu bar at the top right of your screen. Clicking this will immediately end the recording.
Using the Keyboard Shortcut: You can also stop a screen recording by pressing the keyboard shortcut ⇧⌘5
(Shift-Command-5). This will bring up the screen recording controls again. From there, you can click the stop button. Sometimes, pressing ⌘⌃Esc
(Command-Control-Esc) and selecting the Stop
option can also work.
Using QuickTime Player: If you initiated the recording through QuickTime Player (quicktime%20player), switch to the QuickTime Player window and click the stop button (a square). You can also go to the "File" menu and select "Stop Recording".
If the Stop Button is Missing: If you can't find the stop button in the menu bar, it's possible it's hidden or the recording is frozen. Try the keyboard shortcuts above first. If those don't work, you may need to force quit the recording process through Activity Monitor (activity%20monitor). Search for "Screen Recording" or "QuickTime Player" in Activity Monitor, select the process, and click the "X" button to force quit. Note that you might lose the recorded file if you force quit.
